3 years old Soni is an enthusiastic and cheerful child whose bright smile hides the struggles she has bravely endured. Since birth, she had been fighting congenital bilateral cataract — a condition that clouded both her eyes and dimmed her ability to see the world around her.
Soni’s father, Md. Niyamul, is a daily wage construction worker who often travels to other states in search of work to support his large family. Despite his meagre income, he has always prioritized his children’s health and education. Soni is the youngest among six siblings — with two elder sisters and three elder brothers. One of her sisters, Manisha, had also undergone cataract surgery about one and a half years ago at ICARE Eye Hospital, completely free of cost.
The family’s journey has been filled with challenges. Niyamul’s eldest son, aged 25, is a special child with a 100% disability since birth, adding to the family’s emotional and financial burden. Yet, Niyamul remains steadfast, working tirelessly to ensure all his children receive education and basic facilities — something he never had the privilege to enjoy himself.
Despite her poor vision, little Soni’s spirit never faded. She loved learning new things, playing with her friends, and exploring her surroundings. However, as time passed, her vision deteriorated further, making it increasingly difficult for her to study or recognize faces. Her father was deeply worried but felt helpless when doctors advised urgent bilateral cataract surgery — something far beyond his financial capacity.
With renewed hope, he brought Soni to our hospital where after a thorough pre-operative examination; both of Soni’s eyes were successfully operated on — completely free of cost.
Today, Soni can see clearly, play joyfully, and continue her learning with confidence.
